My mother loved the music but I wish that you had incorporated music for a younger group of people as well and not as much line dances because unlike my husband I don't know how to line very well.

Love is the greatest measure - DJ Seko Varner

It's three months later and I still rested uneasy when this event popped into my mind. Tonight I realized what was bothering me. I may have been using the incorrect ruler.

In all honesty the event was beautiful and emotionally the event was touching. The bride was a knock out. Her dress simply amplified her beauty and the groom made the tuxedo look enchanting. The Evangelical Christian tone of the ceremony truly set the mood, and became the central focus for the event. The family of both the bride and groom lit the ballroom with smiles and tears-of-joy which were thrilling and humbling to observe. The guests were almost as captivating as the post-ceremony view of the couple at the top of the stairwell preparing to make their descent into the reception. The music for the ceremony was a lovely mix of a live pianist, a live singer, and Jazzy-Gospel music I played for the prelude's prelude. The microphone I set-up for the live singer worked perfectly, the microphone used to ensure that the Bride-Groom-Officiant trio were all easily heard worked without a flaw. The bride entered being serenaded by a great enthralling voice. The officiant began the ceremony with an interesting mini-sermon on salvation and had an altar call (Will you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior ?). I couldn't wait for the recessional as the groom choose a popular Earth, Wind, and Fire song to "Groove" (hint-hint) their way into the reception........... As a performer one learns that the audience is very much a part of the performance. This is one of the few events where I don't feel that I connected with the crowd in a way that enhanced every moment.

The upscale formal reception had a very casual, worshipful, and jovial feel. Singing and swinging along to great soulful music didn't seem to capture the ambiance of this celebration. The groom hinted to me "Do you think you could play some Gospel ? Maybe we should do all Gospel instead ?" I smiled knowing that I had just switched over to Gospel Jazz about 45 seconds before approaching the groom to "check-in". Shaking the groom's hand I replied "No problem my friend, I'll keep it just like this." It was a heart-warming sight to see the guests shower the couple with love. The guests were so comfortable with each other, embracing the religious overtone, and celebrating the newly bonded family that a throw-down party wasn't going to be icing on the cake. I hadn't received a complaint. I actually received a great deal of compliments. "You seem so professional. Can I have your card ?"..... "Thanks for playing the Gospel music. Most DJs don't carry Gospel."......."Hey Seko. It's good to see you at this event. I know everything is going to go right." The coordinator Tamara Hundley even told me "You're doing great. Everything is going great !" after I shared with her that I just didn't feel as connected as I wanted to be. Three months later I know that I actually felt disconnected because I realized that this event wasn't going to be the high energy 'laugh-sing-dance-cry-shout-party' that I've become known for...... I also realized that I measure the success of the event and my performance upon creating and maintaining those high energy 'laugh-sing-dance-cry-shout-parties'. As much as I planned to rock everyone's world, my world was the one that was rocked. This event was going to be remembered and memorialized on the merits of the glowing love and support of the guests.

We definitely had a ball during the "line dance party". We got our 'Wobble-Wobble' on, and even did the "Get Your Praise On Line Dance" along with other popular favorites. As I put on the last line dance, "The Electric Slide" I felt my heart grow heavy. I knew that that this was the end of the dancing. The remainder of the event was a square focus on hugs, kisses, photos with family friends, and spontaneous toasts. I'm thankful for the coordinator, Tamara, who reminded me that all events can't be judged on the event's party-level. Perhaps they should be judged on the event's Love-level. "There's a lot of LOVE in the air." noted Tamara........ She was right.......

Today it all made sense....... Three months later...... I'm not sure what clicked, but it clicked..
Love is the greatest measure. Today I have a new feeling. I feel honored that I was chosen to witness such a great love affair. I feel honored that the couple chose me to provide services for them. And I feel professionally and emotionally taller from the growth that three months of self-bashing and today's light of epiphany has provided......... Ashee & Amen !

This event was built for fun ! Isha Foss Events was the event coordinator. Digital Dream Makers provided the videography & the photographers were the husband and wife team of Grant & Deb Photographers. We added a lil' downsouth flava' by adding a 'Second Line' into the introductions of the wedding party. We also had a ball during the dinner hour as we sang along to the mixture of Old-School & New-School Soul music favorites that we created just for this occasion. The guests began dancing during the dinner as Shay was belting out the tunes serenading her new husband. Steve just smiled and let his woman lead !

The event remained tailored and expertly handled. The 1st dance ended-up becoming an unexpected special mix ! As I chose "You are" performed by Charlie Wilson, their chosen 1st dance I must have slipped a space down. As I was introducing the 1st dance drawing attention to the bride & groom I thought to myslef "This must be the long version" as the begining notes didn't remind me of the song. 10 seconds as they are dancing I heard Kem's version of "You Are" as the crowd ohh'ed and ahh'ed at the beautifuk scene. Looking towards our coordinator Isha Foss I stated "It's the wrong tune, I'll fix it." Isha seemed surprised, "Look at that smile on her face, she's glowing ! Are you sure ?" replied Isha. Within seconds I beat-mixed Charlie Wilson's version in while I directed the crowd to loudly "Express your love towards the new husband and wife embraced and enjoying their first dance." As the crowd roared saluting the couple via voice and the ringing of glasses. Our beautiful Shay blushed as she heard the familar voice of Charlie Wilson. It's a wrap ! Even the first dance held a special touch that could never be re-created. As the first dance blended into an 'extended first', a Positive Vibes speciality one guest ran up to me shouting "How did you do that ? I love Kem and I LOVE CHARLIE WILSON ! Mixing their songs together was genius !!!! Can I get a copy of that mix ?" I smiled knowing that The Creator always has a Master Plan ! As I smiled at the married couples who were all dancing with our new couple I knew that "we plan, and they plan but the Almighty is the best of Planners !"

The remainder of the night was pure dancing and delight ! We celebrated all the Fathers with a special dance, celebrated all of the mothers with a special dance. Both dances began with the couple and ended with all we were celebrating dancing and singing along ! A special intro before the toast capped off sentimental words from guests that couldn't be stopped. Even after the coordinator removed the microphone from the guests lined up to love the couple the guests kept coming. It was very obvious the couple was loved by all involved. Shouts out to the crew from Mississippi who almost broke the dance floor with the second 'Second Line' of the night. With decorated Umbrellas and Purple sashes, the energy was crazy !!!! I can't wait to see the photos and video !

      A hug from our couple at the nights end stated all that needed to be said. "Everything was excellent !" beamed Shay. This event was a subcontracted event for R2Z Entertainment, which is owned by a former Positive Vibes DJ, DJ HotRod ! Rod shared with me before providing the contract...."Shay does event planning and she's former Military. Everything has to be right just to everything to be o.k." As he called after the event he noted "Shay said you were Awesome ! I don't know what you did, but I'm glad you did it." Simply put, we had a blast. Here is a link to the feedback form:

This was a homecoming of sorts. I can't remember when I performed the first of the Hockaday family events. It had to be in the late 1990s, maybe around 1994. After doing one family event I believe I performed three other weddings and have done at least six others from guests who attended one of the original four events. I must admit this event proceeded with great difficulty although I'm not sure if anyone truly knew about it. I arrived at the site an hour and a half prior to the event, a little later than I normally do although I'm contracted to arrive 45 minutes prior. I needed every moment of that time as I ran into about 10 former clients that were not connected to this event who stopped me from completing set-up as quickly as I wanted to. I completed set-up/dress up 10 minutes prior to the events starting time a bit bothered as I brought along a light show as a gratis-contract upgrade but was unable to set-up the lights because of very close quarters. I then noticed another D.J. walking his equipment into the hallway......... 45 minutes later as he turned on his equipment I noticed a slight dimming of the room and a slight dim on my equipment's console that disappeared as quickly as it occurred. 10 minutes passed and I thought nothing of it until realizing that the music that I was playing on my Cortex media mixer had come to an abrupt end. Scanning the equipment I realized that something was really wrong.....I quickly began playing a c.d. on the c.d. mixer........ The sound became a bit distorted although looking around the room all of the guests were seemingly enjoying the R&B-Jazz playing with some guests softly singing along to the tracks. I turned off the amp' switching to the back-up amp' and hear the same mild distortion. I bypassed the mixer and heard the same mild distortion. Noting that it was time for an announcement I opened my microphone expecting the worse and the microphone sound was crystal clear as I announced that the guests of honor would be arriving soon, but the c.d. stopped playing as soon as I began talking. When I stopped the c.d. mixer flashed and restarted the track. I realized that the c.d. player must be affected so I ran outside gathering my back-up system when I noticed that the guests of honor had arrived. I moved the back-up system into the room and walked outside to arrange the guests of honor. After arranging them I started their music and opened the mic again...... "Friends and Family !" I exclaimed and realized the c.d. player stoped playing and began flashing... Continuing with the announcements and introductions each guest of honor received about five seconds of music before the music magically stopped. I filled in where the music left off with motivational statements and salutations about the guests filling the void when it hit me...... Something or someone has affected the facility's power. Following the intros' and prayer I knew what had to be done. Switching to my back-up computer engaged the music back to crystal clear sound. I adjusted the power input on the Cortex and shut-off my c.d. mixer. Complaining to the facility's staff was to no avail until a staff member who had been there for years prior to the remodeling saw me and greeted me. I shared with him the problem and he noted "Ain't nothing gonna' change. They have four warmers plugged into the wall sucking all of the power. The other D.J. isn't helping matters, I'm not sure what to tell you." All of the while I knew I had to rock the crowd in a modified manner tonight..... And rock we did ! My mature crowd came to celebrate the couple's 50 years with a party vengeance ! We kept it Old-School most of the night and only really were able to "Go Current" towards the last 45 minutes of the party that went 35 minutes over. At that time the Mature crowd kinda' said 'Let the young folks have the dance floor now, we did our damage!!!" It was great celebrating with the Hockadays ! See yall' at 4th of July !

Sour 16 Party

"There are times when things go wrong, this was one of them." D.J. A.T. stated in our post event debriefing. A.T. has been used to stellar feedback (note the feedback form to the left, click the photo to enlarge the photo) and upon reading the email received from our disgruntled client he was duly bothered. After reviewing what went wrong, and what could be done to prevent these problems in the future, and how to better handle similar problems if faced again, we both signed. This is not the experience we wanted for the client, and she was heated. I was ending a trip to Puerto Rico when D. Prewitt called with her complaint. Immediately upon return a 50% refund was issued. Our procedure is to immediately return 50% of the fee, then to conduct an investigation before providing additional refunds. The client provided us with a written statement detailing her concerns and A.T. and I met. At the end of our meeting we both agreed upon a full refund. There is only one chance for excellence at an event and this time we missed our normal mark. Our client has shared a desire towards pursuing legal action and shared plans to purchase advertisements to promote the debacle. A.T. ended the meeting with sharing all the things that went right. The teens danced and partied hard, and he played a majority of the requested songs. However, when something goes wrong, all the right things don't matter. We stand behind our services. She received all of her money back.
